Poverty and Hunger - Ending it in Tennessee

While the U.S. has made strides in poverty reduction, the impact on Americans is widespread and harsh. According to USDA 34 million people are food insecure including 9 million children. In Tennessee, over 809,000 people face hunger and 234,000 of those experiencing hunger are children. Tennessee’s child poverty rate is 20%, placing it in the top ten of states with the worst poverty rate. Join us to learn about organizations across the state that are addressing poverty and working to improve access to programs like SNAP, WIC and child nutrition. There is more that can be done to end poverty hunger in Tennessee. We will share steps that individuals and organizations can take to address this important issue.

Understanding Why Military and Veteran Families Face Food Insecurity Webinar with Tennessee Justice Center

Understanding Why Military and Veteran Families Face Food Insecurity Webinar with Tennessee Justice Center

It is a grim reality that many military and veteran service members who have defended our country struggle to feed their families. A study from the USDA found that veterans were 7.4% more likely to experience food insecurity than their civilian counterparts. Some of these issues are systemic, specifically the inclusion of the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) into calculations of income for SNAP. Other barriers, such as social stigmas in the military can also discourage individuals from asking for help. There are efforts to alleviate these barriers, and proposed legislation that offer hope for a stronger, healthier future. Join us for an hour-long webinar about the causes of persistent food insecurity in military and veteran households, resources available to these families, and important legislation that has the potential to better support them.
